Radio cell measurement by RaMoNA 48

Existing network is expanded thanks to six WWAN module cards for CompactPCI® Serial systems

In collaboration with the Landeskriminalamt (State Criminal Police Office), EKF has developed a system carrier for the openRISE project. The aim of the project is to establish an EU-wide open standard for radio cell information systems.

This system directly addresses the acute needs of the police in the area of mobile communications surveillance.

Radio cell measurement provides an alternative localization option. Existing localization systems, such as local position markers or GNSS data from mobile devices, suffer from limited availability. As a result, they fail to deliver accurate results. Existing mobile connections significantly improve wave propagation accuracy. RaMoNA 48, the system that EKF manufactures, performs the required radio cell measurement.

Radio cell propagation has specific characteristics that affect performance. Because providers continuously make unannounced infrastructure changes, the system must undergo cyclical remapping.

In order to meet the requirements of the project, a system is needed that includes specially developed peripheral cards and a customized housing that is suitable for use in vehicles.

To meet the requirements of the project, the system includes specially developed peripheral cards and a customized housing that is suitable for use in vehicles. To cover the large number of networks in parallel, the system connects up to 40 mobile radio modules to an integrated control PC. Highly specialized software on this PC reliably evaluates and secures the results.

What’s inside

EKF worked closely with the customer and developed a system that meets hardware and software requirements.

The mobile measuring computer includes a CPU (SC9-TOCCATA) and eight peripheral modules (SPV-MYSTIC). This configuration significantly improves network coverage.

The finished system, RAMONA 40-5G, uses modern, interchangeable radio modems. These modems meet different standards, environmental conditions, and country-specific restrictions.

SC9-TOCCATA

SC9-TOCCATA

The SC9-TOCCATA is a powerful 4HP/3U CompactPCI® Serial board equipped with an Intel® 11th Generation XEON® processor (Tiger Lake H45 platform).

It is equipped with mass storage solution based on flat mezzanine expansion cards that can accommodate up to two M.2 NVME SSD modules.

SPV-MYSTIC

The EKF SPV-MYSTIC module carrier cards feature five mini FAKRA quad-style RF connectors and a single SMA socket for connecting up to 21 antenna cables.

The card has four carriers for M.2 modules that are suitable for WWAN 5G modules. In addition, two soldered 4G modules and 4:1 R/F combiner/splitter circuits are installed to reduce the required number of external antennas.

The antenna switches connect multiple modules to one antenna.

SQ4-AX

SQ4-AX

The  CompactPCI® Serial peripheral card SQ4-AX is a based on an 32-bit SoC microcontroller and provides sensors for temperature, humidity, motion and acceleration (Gyro).

System voltages are monitored by a precision ADC. The front panel is equipped with a group of status LEDs, two tactile switches and a buzzer.

Furthermore, up to three fans can be individually controlled by the SoC, and directly attached to an on board connector. The microcontroller communicates with the host CPU card via backplane USB2 (Ethernet over USB) and I2 C.
